TechNote #251

"Understanding the Integration of the Notes ID Password with Third-Party Identity Management Systems"

Primary Problem: End-users need a separate password — the Lotus Notes ID file — to access the Notes client. But, how can it be managed without the complicated processes of restoring and recertifying, and uploading/downloading it through a browser? And, how can it be easily integrated with the company’s third-party identity management system (i.e. IBM Tivoli, CA eTrust SiteMinder, Courion Password Courier, BMC Control-SA/PassPort, M-Tech P-Synch and Novell Identity Manager)?

TechNote #252

"Handling an Unexpected Password Prompt When Launching Notes"

Primary Problem: End-user starts up Lotus Notes and receives a password prompt to access the Notes ID file. Unless the user gives the password that is in the Notes ID file, they will continue to see this prompt. If the correct password is given Notes will open. If the incorrect password is given the user must press F1 to cancel and then must exit Notes.

"Deploying Password Power 8 to Thousands of Clients Automatically Without End-User Intervention"

Primary Problem: Because Password Power 8 is client-side software, installation must occur on end-users’ desktops. This generally means that companies have to involve end-users in ensuring the software is installed completely and properly. But, is it possible for a company with hundreds — or even thousands — of end-users to install Password Power 8 without relying on the end-users’ to participate?

TechNote #254

"The Advantage of Authentication Redirection over Password Synchronization"

Primary Problem: With password synchronization, one password (such as Windows) is synched with the passwords of other user applications (such as Notes and Domino HTTP) so that one and the same password can be used for each login prompt the end-user encounters. Even though only one password is needed, having multiple password prompts still creates a cumbersome login experience, as the average end-user might need to login 2-3 times for each of their 6-8 applications in a single day.

Administratively, password synchronization entails tremendous overhead because copies of the password must be maintained in each of the user accounts. Multiple password stores create complexity and inconvenience, particularly every time the password is reset, as the change needs to be made to the password copies in all the different locations.

"Achieving Single Sign-On for Your Organization's End-Users"

Primary Problem: Removing the need for multiple passwords and reducing password prompts is possible through various means, the most effective of which is single sign-on (SSO). However, many options for reduced sign-on still do not enable single sign-on to a browser or portal. The question is: How can SSO be achieved in a Web-based environment? And, how is Web SSO facilitated?

"Storage, Handling and Security of End-Users' Passwords"

Primary Problem: Facilitating effective and secure password management requires special handling of the passwords. To enable single sign-on, password synchronization and authentication redirection, how does Password Power store passwords and transport them to other systems? How are passwords handled securely?

"Username Mapping with Authentication Redirection"

Primary Problem: Because the various systems used in an organization are independent of one another, how is it possible to map usernames successfully when authenticating with a network logon to access each of these systems? If an end-user logs in with their Windows username, how do they arrive at the username for the target system?

TechNote #259

"Enabling Single Sign-On to Lotus Notes in a Distributed Computing Environment"

Primary Problem: Organizations with Citrix Server or Microsoft Terminal Servers find that Lotus Notes' built-in single sign-on (SSO) capability does not work because Lotus does not provide support for these environments.

"How to Avoid Name Conflicts with Domino and Password Power"

Scenario Description: The following scenario is where two users have a similar short name, and the Domino Server with Password Power installed looks up the incorrect name from the Notes Address Book (NAB) from the ($Users) view.

TechNote #261

"Achieving Domino Single Sign-On Without Person Documents in the Domino NAB"

Preface: Most Lotus Domino administrators have the belief that they must have Person and Group Documents in the Domino Directory. There are several arguments to this belief:

1.  Person Documents are needed for Domino HTTP access because they contain the password the user provides to authenticate.

2.  Person documents are the only way Domino can know who a user is.

3.  Domino Group documents are the only way Domino can determine what resources a user can access.
